The Adult Basic Education (ABE) service in Fife provides free tuition for adults wanting to improve their basic skills in reading, writing, spelling, arithmetic and basic maths.
We also offer free advice and help to those who are dyslexic, a condition which affects one in ten of the population.
What do we do?
We run small groups and short courses to develop and improve:
- Reading skills
- Writing skills
- Spelling
- Letter writing / form filling
- Grammar / punctuation
- Handwriting
- Basic maths
- Arithmetic
- SQA Modules: Wordstart, Numberstart, Core Maths II and III, Communications at Access 2, Access 3 and Intermediate 1, Maths at Access 2, Access 3 and Intermediate 1
- Entry tests for police, fire service, armed forces etc
How does it work?
After a chat with the local organiser, tuition will be arranged to fit in with your work or family commitments. Most people join one of our small, informal groups. Some people attend once a week, others attend more often. Classes run in the evenings and during the day at local venues such as Opportunity Centres, Community Use Schools and Community Centres.
Everybody works on what they have chosen to learn, at their own level and their own pace.
- All tuition and courses are free
- There's a pre-course interview to discuss your learning needs.
- The service is available throughout Fife.
- Groups meet during the day and in the evening.
- Groups consist of 5 to 8 students.
- Learners can start and leave at any time of the year.
- Travel expenses are paid for eligible learners
For further information, contact your local Opportunity Centre.
Some local colleges also run workshops to help you with English and basic maths, and may also offer support for other subjects. Contact your local college for further information.
