Student loans
Students can apply for state-provided loans to pay for living
costs - a portion of this is means-tested. A new means-tested grant
also offers up to £2,700 a year. All universities have to offer
bursaries of at least £300 to students who receive the full
government grant.
Different funding applies to students on NHS funded degree and
diploma courses: Nursing, midwifery and operating department
practice students can have a non-means tested bursary. Students on
degree level healthcare courses can have a means tested bursary but
are not eligible for the full student loan.
Other students in Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland are also
eligible for means-tested grants; many universities also provide
bursaries to poorer students.
