Edinburgh Student Accommodation Costs
Rent is the biggest expense for students.
Prices vary considerably, according to the type of
accommodation.
For example, the British
Council advises that student accommodation can cost
between £67 and £170 per week. Prices vary depending on whether the
accommodation is catered or self-catered and whether it has a
shared or en-suite bathroom. A room in a privately rented flat,
meanwhile, can cost between £180 and £350 a month, excluding
utility bills.
Research specific to Edinburgh estimates that
average rents are £68 per week, but this can drop to £61 in cheaper
areas such as Leith.
With such a large student population in the
city region, there’s a wide and varied supply of many types of
affordable accommodation - from university and college
accommodation to different types of private rental. Most
students start in university accommodation then move to privately
rented accommodation with friends in their second year, although
there are many more options too.
University accommodation
Contact your university for the most up to date information about
what they offer. Most first year undergraduates are automatically
offered a place in university accommodation, if they live about 54
km or more from the relevant city centre.
College Accommodation
Due to a lower demand, colleges have a limited number of student
flats.
Jewel
and Esk Valley College and
Oatridge
College both offer accommodation. However, Jewel and
Esk Valley College’s campus is currently undergoing redevelopment
and student accommodation will not be available until October 2008.
The Evolve project website
provides further information.
Many other colleges have accommodation officers who will help
you find somewhere to stay. Talk to the colleges directly for
specific information on availability.
