A and AS Levels

Several independent schools in the area offer A-levels and AS levels, making the transition to Scotland easier for families relocating from outside Scotland.

St Mary's Music School

This topped the 2006 league tables for the best A-level and Advanced Higher results in Scotland's independent sector. Based in Edinburgh city centre.

Fettes School

Famous for educating former  Prime Minister Tony Blair and the fictitious character of James Bond, located north of the city centre. Students attained the highest A-level marks in the League for the second year running.

Merchiston Castle School

Boys’ boarding and day school in Colinton, on the city region’s southern edge.

Edinburgh Academy


Centrally-located school for boys 5-16 years and co-education for 2-5 year olds and 16 years plus.

The 2006 League tables also revealed that St George's School for Girls came second among schools that concentrate on Advanced Highers. Merchiston Castle and Edinburgh Academy came second and third in the A-levels table, which also featured Loretto School in Musselburgh.
