Qualifications - higher and further
education
Many pupils leave school at the ages of 16 and
17 to move on to further education, after completing Standard
Grades, Intermediate 1 and 2 and Highers. Others stay on for a
6th year for re-sits or to study any of a wide range of
courses: additional Highers, Advanced Highers, GNVQs, National
Certificate (NC) modules and possibly even the Higher National
Certificate (HNC).
All Scottish exam results are normally
published the first week in August.
For those relocating from England at school
level, the transition is eased further by the fact that many
independent schools in the city region offer A
and AS Levels as well as Scottish examinations. Others
offer the International Baccalaureate and courses to help the
transition from international qualifications to a degree
course in Scotland.
