“Typically, graduates will firstly try the
milk round and attend careers fairs at their university or college,
if they’re looking to join a graduate trainee scheme with one of
the big blue-chips. They can also use their careers service.
“Graduate jobs are also advertised in
newspapers e.g. The Scotsman and online e.g. on s1jobs.com. Job ads
are also placed by relevant companies in trade press.
“We would also recommend graduates target the
companies they are particularly interested in and send out their CV
speculatively, and take on any work placements they feel may add to
their skills and CV – if they can afford to work for free to get a
foot in the door.
“Sometimes finding a vacancy is a question of
luck rather than judgement. Recruitment agencies like us can also
help. However, companies tend to be approached direct by the
recently qualified / graduates, so they don’t often come to
recruitment agencies to help them. We tend to start recruiting
candidates who have at least a few months’ experience under their
belts.”
