Edinburgh Leisure
For a dormant volcano, Arthur’s Seat is a
conspicuously active place. Tri-athletes, runners and
orienteers traverse its heaths and paths. Many are in training for
events in the ever expanding calendar of urban sports, including
the Edinburgh Marathon and the Rat Race (the
inaugural urban adventure race held annually in Edinburgh and other
UK cties).
Edinburgh City Region attracts major,
international sporting events and has hosted two Commonwealth
Games. Murrayfield Stadium welcomes capacity crowds of 67,500 for
rugby internationals.
The range of leisure facilities is impressive:
the world’s largest indoor climbing arena , over a hundred golf courses,
all-seater football stadiums. There’s an Olympic size
swimming pool, Britain’s longest artificial ski slope and indoor
tennis courts. An ambitious £49m sports development has been
announced which will include a stadium and running track.
Rattle down a switchback trail at Glentress Mountain Bike Centre, Scotland’s
renowned mountain biking centre. Surf the swells and rollers
of the East Lothian coastline. Dance the Gay Gordon’s and Strip The
Willow at a ceilidh (a traditional social dance) in a regency
ballroom.
