Edinburgh Pre-School Education - Nursery
& Playgroup
Edinburgh City Region has many state-run,
private and voluntary nursery school and playgroup options to
choose from. In fact, Edinburgh was the first Scottish local
authority to introduce pre-school education for all children.
Many local schools offer pre-school education.
Funded part-time nursery places for children are available, usually
from the term after the child’s third birthday.
If you would like a place in a council nursery
you should put your child’s name on a waiting list at the nursery
of your choice as soon as he/she is two years old. This can be done
at more than one nursery. You will be asked to make a choice nearer
the time.
Early years education is about learning,
playing, exploring and having fun. Your child will be encouraged to
do all these things with friends and on their own. By getting to
know your child well, staff work with parents and carers to lay the
foundations for primary school learning.
Every early years centre follows a curriculum
framework which covers:
1. Emotional,
personal and social development
2. Communication
and language
3. Knowledge and
understanding of the world
4. Expressive
and aesthetic development
5. Physical
development and movement.
