Independent schools
Edinburgh City Region is renowned for its high
concentration of private schools. According to Schools in
Scotland’s Guide to Independent Schools 2005, it has 12 of
Scotland’s 22 private schools within its boundaries.
In 2006 Edinburgh's private schools performed
well compared to schools elsewhere. St George's School for Girls
came second among those which concentrate on Advanced Highers.
Merchiston Castle and Edinburgh Academy were second and third
respectively in the A-levels table, which also featured
Musselburgh’s Loretto School.
Pupils at St Mary's Music School got the best
Advanced Higher scores in the country. Fettes College students
attained the highest A-level marks for the second year running.
