Additional support for
learning
Edinburgh City Region provides assistance for
children and young people who require additional support in order
to fulfil their potential.
Additional support for learning does not
exclusively relate to academic performance. It may involve
building confidence or helping with circumstances at home which are
affecting a child or young person’s ability to learn. There
are many reasons why additional learning support may be
required. Health issues, disability or having English as a
second language are all possible contributory factors.
Legislation was introduced in 2004 (The Additional Support for Learning Act
2004) to provide support for those who need it most. Councils
throughout the city region have introduced processes to ensure that
this objective is achieved.
