Edinburgh Education - School Subjects

From age 5 – 14:

  • English language: All pupils study English language, which is taught through reading, writing, talking and listening
  • Mathematics: Pupils are taught to acquire skills in mathematical thinking and to be comfortable using and applying their knowledge
  • Environmental studies: Organised into three main areas - science technology and social subjects, taught from Primary 1 to Secondary 2
  • Modern languages: French, German, Italian and Spanish are the main European languages taught from Primary 6 onwards
  • Information and communications technology (ICT): Every Primary 1 to Primary 5 class has a class e-mail address. Primary 6, Primary 7, and secondary pupils have personal e-mail addresses
  • Expressive arts: Art and design, music, drama and dance from Primary 1 to Secondary 2
  • Personal and social development: Promoting the learning of life skills
  • Religious and moral education: Covering a variety of spiritual and philosophical traditions. Roman Catholic schools develop personal beliefs in Catholicism
  • Physical education and sport: Physical education (PE) in a variety of different sports and activities.
