Edinburgh Education - Attainment Levels

The best exam results ever are being achieved in Edinburgh’s state secondary schools. The percentage of S4 pupils gaining:

  • five or more standard grades increased from 69% in 1996 to 88% in 2006
  • three or more highers at grades A-C, by the end of S5, increased from 22% in 1996 to 25% in 2005
  • three or more highers at grades A-C (by the end of S6) increased from 30% in 1996 to 32% in 2005.

The story is equally dynamic for Edinburgh’s primary schools, with the number of primary pupils reaching their relevant 5-14 attainment levels rising in reading during 1999 from 73% to 83%, in writing from 64% to 76% and in maths from 75% to 83%.

‘Levels of attainment’ from A (the most elementary) to F (the most advanced) are used to gauge how individual pupils are progressing between Primary 1 (age five) and Secondary 2 (age 14). You will find a list of curricular areas and the level that the child has reached in his or her report.

Your child’s school will advise you and your child of progress and of the appropriate next steps.

Scottish exam results are generally published the first week in August.
