Edinburgh Education - School Curriculum
Schools in Edinburgh City Region offer pupils
a broad and balanced curriculum.
Central features of the 5-14 curriculum
(followed from Primary 1 to Secondary 2):
- breadth: a wide range of areas of
learning
- balance: attention given to each area of
learning
- continuity: each stage of learning builds on
what pupils already know and can do
- progression: increasingly challenging but
attainable goals for all.
All pupils study English and Mathematics in
Secondary 3 and Secondary 4, followed by a choice of at least one
from each of the following areas:
- modern languages
- scientific studies: physics, chemistry,
biology, science
- social and environmental studies: history,
geography, modern studies
- technological activities and applications:
craft, design and technology, computing studies, home economics,
business education
- creative and aesthetic activities: art and
design, music, drama
- physical education
- religious and moral education.
There are further choices at Secondary 5 and
Secondary 6.
