Multicultural communities
Edinburgh is a diverse city with new migrant
communities continuing to grow. The pace of change is demonstrated
by the 18,000 immigrant workers that have arrived in Edinburgh in
two years. More than one in four new arrivals in Scotland sign up
for work in Edinburgh, at a rate of 25 a day, from Poland,
Australia, New Zealand as well as other parts of Europe and
Asia.
Edinburgh has a very significant diplomatic
community, with the Scottish Parliament giving the city additional
political weight. Edinburgh now hosts over 40 Consular and Honorary
Consular offices.
Edinburgh has a strong, flourishing
international student community, with nearly 11,000 students from
outside the UK. Edinburgh’s higher and further education
institutions support students of all ages, studying a wide variety
of courses, from Accounting to Zoology. Many of the city
region’s educational institutions have received national awards for
excellence.
