Central Edinburgh

The meticulously planned elegance of the Georgian New Town contrasts with the evolved layout of the Old Town. Both areas continue to have large resident communities.

Wander down the Royal Mile (High Street). It’s the backbone of the Capital and stretches from Edinburgh Castle to the Palace of Holyroodhouse.

Tour the underground vaults which were once occupied by Edinburgh’s overcrowded population. They were sociable places where the occupants drank claret (then a safer alternative to the water) and ate oysters from the Forth. The friendly tradition of enjoying a drink or two in the city continues in the Old Town to this day. Visit the Cowgate and the Grassmarket for a landmark night out.

Parallel to the retail offering of Princes Street, George Street typifies the grandeur of the New Town. Bars with Bauhaus interiors have replaced Regency coffee houses, but the original vision of New Town planners remains gloriously intact.
