Edinburgh Culture - Art Galleries & Exhibitions

Take a short walk from Princes Street to the Scottish National Portrait Gallery, a spectacular testament to the Victorian, Gothic revival.  It was the world’s first, purpose-built portrait gallery.

The National Gallery Complex on Edinburgh’s Mound displays art from the prestigious national collection.  You’ll find works by the leading figures of European art: Titian, Rembrandt, Monet and Van Gogh.  The Scottish artistic legacy is also celebrated with paintings by Raeburn, McTaggart and Wilkie.

A free bus service takes you to the Gallery of Modern Art and Dean Gallery to the west of the city centre.  Here you can see works by eminent twentieth century artists including Francis Bacon, David Hockney and Andy Warhol and contemporary artists such as Damien Hirst.

The Fruitmarket Gallery is one of the UK’s premier, exhibition venues for contemporary art. Directly opposite, the City Art Centre exhibits selected works from the municipal art collection which comprises 3,500 items.
