Take a short walk from Princes Street to the
Scottish National Portrait Gallery, a spectacular testament to the
Victorian, Gothic revival. It was the world’s first,
purpose-built portrait gallery.
The National Gallery Complex on Edinburgh’s
Mound displays art from the prestigious national collection.
You’ll find works by the leading figures of European art: Titian,
Rembrandt, Monet and Van Gogh. The Scottish artistic legacy
is also celebrated with paintings by Raeburn, McTaggart and
Wilkie.
A free bus service takes you to the Gallery of
Modern Art and Dean Gallery to the west of the city centre.
Here you can see works by eminent twentieth century artists
including Francis Bacon, David Hockney and Andy Warhol and
contemporary artists such as Damien Hirst.
The Fruitmarket Gallery is one of the UK’s
premier, exhibition venues for contemporary art. Directly opposite,
the City Art
Centre exhibits selected works from the municipal art
collection which comprises 3,500 items.
