Edinburgh Culture - Music And Dance
The musical element of the Edinburgh
International Festival has had a global impact for over sixty
years. The Festival inspires a music scene which beguiles
residents throughout the year.
Scottish Opera and Scottish Ballet perform
ambitious, large scale productions at the Festival Theatre.
Margot Fonteyn, Anna Pavlova and Judy Garland have all performed on
its stage, one of the largest in the
UK.
Eminent jazz musicians, the Scottish Chamber
Orchestra and Scottish Chamber Ensemble regularly play at nearby
Queen’s Hall, a converted
church. The city’s Usher Hall is a regular host of classical,
contemporary and family concerts.
Joining a choral or orchestral society is a
good way to become part of Edinburgh’s musical society.
Newcomers are welcome at the Edinburgh Symphony Orchestra, the
Meadows Chamber Orchestra, the New Edinburgh Orchestra and the
Edinburgh Royal Choral Union.
‘Life is a cabaret’ when you enrol in a
musical theatre group in the city region. If you like a show tune,
then join the Bohemians, Southern Light Opera or Livingston
Players.
In the evening the city is alive with
concerts, musicals, jazz bars, folk sessions, and modern music.
Catch a West End musical at the Edinburgh Playhouse or
internationally renowned musicians at the castle’s esplanade.
The wider Edinburgh City Region also has many
popular live music venues attracting international touring acts and
showcasing home grown artists.
