Critical mass

Edinburgh City Region significantly punches above its weight as a business location, with a powerful concentration of private and public sector employers across a relatively compact area, including the global headquarters of several top 100 UK companies with listings on the London Stock Exchange.

Some of the UK's top performing companies and six of Scotland’s top ten are based here. Major PLC headquarters include:

  • Cairn Energy
  • Forth Ports
  • Standard Life
  • RBS (Royal Bank of Scotland)
  • Scottish & Newcastle
  • John Menzies
  • Johnston Press
  • Aegon UK
  • Lloyds TSB Scotland
  • Scottish Widows
  • HBOS (Halifax Bank of Scotland)
  • Wolfson Microelectrnics
  • Optos
  • Invocas
  • British Energy
  • Ardana.

The Scottish Government, NHS Scotland and the City of Edinburgh Council are among the largest public sector employers. Some of Scotland's largest privately-owned companies are also based in Edinburgh City Region, including Murray International Holdings, CALA Group, Miller Group and Globespan Group. These add weight to the thousands of successful small and medium-sized businesses in the area, including high-growth start-ups driving world-class innovation.

The number of blue-chip companies and high-quality businesses that exist in Edinburgh makes it a very attractive place for companies to do business.
