Walk
Edinburgh's relatively compact city centre and
scenic beauty make it a popular walking destination. Twenty per
cent of residents walk to work – the highest rate in Scotland -
while an estimated 56% of pupils walk to school. This 'walkability'
is a key factor in the city's high quality of life and is being
supported with significant investment in pedestrian facilities,
footpaths and roads. More than £64m has been spent improving
pavements and roads since 2002.
