Trams
At the end of 2006, the City of Edinburgh Council overwhelmingly
supported the construction of a new tram network after seeing the
radical benefits tram systems have brought to other UK and European
cities.
Construction of this exciting transport
initiative has now begun across the city. Once completed, the trams
will initially link Edinburgh’s waterfront to the city centre and
beyond to the airport. The first trams are due to be operational by
early 2011.
Trams will enhance the city in many
ways. They will offer a fast, reliable, accessible and
environmentally-friendly transport option for visitors and the
city’s expanding population. The network will reduce congestion by
appealing to car users and will be easily accessible for people
with mobility issues.
