Located on the shores of the Firth of Forth, Edinburgh is a busy port and waterfront city that is easily accessible by sea. It is home to Scotland's largest enclosed deepwater port at Leith, where a dedicated cruise terminal building was opened in 2006 at Leith Western Harbour. The imposing Forth Road and Rail Bridges connect Edinburgh to the north of Scotland via Fife, where there is a superfast ferry connection from Rosyth to Zeebrugge in Belgium. The Forth estuary is also the largest freight port area in Scotland, accounting for roughly a third of total Scottish freight traffic. The £1bn redevelopment of Edinburgh's waterfront area at Granton is one of Britain's largest urban regeneration schemes and will fully connect Edinburgh to its coastline for the first time in its history.

Fife Council and the City of Edinburgh Council are undertaking a study into a potential ferry crossing between the two areas.

The site is magnificent. Along the water's edge, a series of terraces look across the estuary and the harbour to the Kingdom of Fife, the North Sea and the Forth Bridges
