Rail
Edinburgh’s two mainline rail stations – Waverley and Haymarket
– are vital hubs for the city, transporting thousands of commuters
and visitors across Scotland and the UK every day. Waverley
currently handles 23m passengers a year, making it the 16th largest
train station in the UK, and the fifth largest outside London.
Nearly 4m passengers travel through Haymarket station each year and
this figure is set to double in the next 20 years.
Since 2002, there has been a 50% increase in passenger demand
while train numbers have also grown by half in the 15 years to
2007, to 576 a day. Major improvement works to increase
platform capacity have now been completed. These improvements
will allow further increase in rail services including the
introduction of Edinburgh - Airdrie - Glasgow trains in 2010.
