Edinburgh's workforce is both cosmopolitan and
highly localised.
Over half of Edinburgh’s population was born
outwith Edinburgh and 27% outwith Scotland.
In 2005/6, there were 11,670 non-UK nationals
in Edinburgh from 75 different countries registered for National
Insurance.
Just over two-thirds of Edinburgh’s working
population lives within the city. The other main sources of labour
for the Edinburgh economy are West Lothian (7% of the total),
Midlothian (7%), East Lothian (6%), Fife (4%), Falkirk (2%) and the
Scottish Borders (1%).
More than 84% of the economically active
working age population is male and over 78% is female.
