Travel to work area
Edinburgh City Region benefits from a
relatively dense population and a sophisticated transport network, meaning short commuter times
and a wide recruitment pool for employers.
The bulk of the employment is concentrated in
Edinburgh’s city centre with other clusters in the West
Lothian/south Fife economic zone. Key employment locations across
the region include Stirling, Falkirk/Grangemouth, Livingston,
Leith, Glenrothes, Kirkcaldy and Dunfermline.
Workers also travel between key employment
centres around Edinburgh. 2001 census figures show that over 37,400
of Edinburgh’s residents commute outside the city each day for
work. Roughly 37,200 commuters work in the city but live elsewhere.
The number of commuters to Edinburgh from surrounding areas is
predicted to rise.
There are important links to the west, with
25,000 people commuting daily from Glasgow City Region to Edinburgh
City Region and a further 20,000 make the reverse journey.
