Migration
Migration is a central and growing factor in
Edinburgh City Region's demography. More people are moving
into the area than out from the rest of Scotland, the UK and
overseas - especially in the 16-34 age group. Students account for
much of this migration and provide a vital supply of skilled
labour, boosting the area's working age population and knowledge economy.
The Edinburgh City Region has a population of
1,276,692 and this is expected to grow by a further 97,513 or 7.6%
by 2022.
The 2001 census showed the city of Edinburgh
attracted a larger number of international migrants per 1,000 than
any other UK city.
The east of Scotland has also been ranked the
most popular area in the whole of EU for people to settle.
