Academic research base
Edinburgh City Region is internationally
renowned for its academic research base and track record in
commercialisation and technology transfer. The region's
universities are hubs of scientific research excellence boasting a world-class
reputation across a broad range of disciplines including life
sciences, medicine and informatics. The Guardian
University Guide 2008 ranked the University of Edinburgh
as first in the UK for computer science and physics and second in
the UK for medicine and veterinary science.
More than half (54%) of total Scottish
research activity is undertaken in Edinburgh and the Lothians. This
reputation helps attract quality students who then strengthen the
future knowledge economy workforce. Major
initiatives underway to build on this research base include the
Edinburgh Science Triangle, a collaboration
of seven science and technology parks housing 3,300 highly skilled
world-class researchers and over 100 companies, with the potential
to create a further 15,000 new jobs.
