Scotland is reputed internationally for its
education system and high quality, university graduates.
There are more than 270,000 students in higher
education institutions and further education colleges across the
central belt, one of the UK's highest student concentrations.
In Edinburgh, an impressive 32% of adults aged
16-64 hold a first or higher degree.
The city's universities are hubs of research excellence. The University of Edinburgh
and Heriot-Watt are famed for their global five-star research
institutions. Edinburgh City Region’s research and academic
strengths include computing, electrical and electronic engineering,
medicine, mathematics, statistics and finance, biological and
physical sciences and languages.
Many of the city region’s academic
institutions are internationally renowned for their achievements.
For example, the University of Edinburgh has received the following
accolades and ratings:
- The Guardian university guide 2008 ranked the
University of Edinburgh as first in the UK for computer science and
physics and second in the UK for medicine and veterinary
science
- Newsweek, 2006, ranked the University of Edinburgh
sixth in the UK, 11th in Europe and 47th in the world
- The 2007 Times Higher Education Supplement (QS World
University Rankings 2007) ranked the University of Edinburgh
23rd in the world overall.
