Research excellence

The science and technology community across Edinburgh City Region spans many disciplines and leads its field in chemistry, physics, computer science, electrical and electronic engineering, biological sciences, veterinary science and linguistics. 

Edinburgh’s higher education institutions have a combined research income of over £242m a year, with more than 13,000 staff generating world-leading research.  According to the most recent UK Higher Education Research Assessment Exercise, 66% of science, engineering and medical related-research staff in Edinburgh work is rated five or five-star research - the maximum achievable in terms of quality of research - compared with a UK average of 55%. 

The University of Edinburgh ranks highly in the Times Higher Education Supplement list of top 100 global universities for biomedicine,science  and  technology.
