International science centre

Edinburgh City Region has a long history of innovation and is one of Europe's top ten locations for science and technology.

In 2002, the city region received the European Commission's Region of Innovation Excellence award. This recognises the outstanding research undertaken here and acknowledges the support available to develop research and build companies with high-growth potential.

Past and present breakthroughs include Dolly the sheep, the world's first cloned mammal, anaesthetic, pioneered by physician James Simpson; logarithms, invented by John Napier; and James Clerk Maxwell's theory of electromagnetism.

Internationally acclaimed scientists continue to build on this past success, helped by the city region's world-class research base, high calibre graduates, unrivalled environment and rich cluster of expertise in sectors including stem cell research, regenerative medicine and informatics.
