Stem cells and regenerative medicine
Stem cells represent one of the most
advanced areas of life sciences with significant potential for
therapeutic treatment, through regenerative medicine, of diseases
like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s, organ failure and hearing and
vision loss.
Edinburgh is home to a number of key
commercial players in the sector. The city also hosts a significant
volume of academic and collaborative research into stems cells and
regenerative medicine in world-class institutes such as the
Institute of Stem Cell Reseach and the Roslin
Institute. The new Scottish Centre for Regenerative Medicine,
under Professor Ian Wilmut, will build on this,
enhancing Edinburgh’s reputation as a hub of pioneering research
and development in the field.
