Biotechnology and biomanufacturing
Edinburgh is home to a cluster of
biotechnology firms that compete successfully at a global level
using biotechnological products and processes developed across the
city region, such as antibacterial drugs for antibiotic-resistant
bacteria.
Companies such as Hydrosense demonstrate
Edinburgh's strong track record in commercialisation. Founded by Dr
Neil Polwart of Heriot-Watt University to exploit electro-optics
and biotechnology, it went on to develop the world's first
semi-quantitative, real-time identification system for bacteria in
water.
Driven by senior researchers with extensive
international experience in the biotechnology sector, Edinburgh’s
universities are collaborating with industry partners to address
fundamental challenges in bioprocess development and
intensification.
