Retail developments

Edinburgh City Region’s retail sector is constantly evolving and a number of significant new developments are underway. The developments in Edinburgh city have fuelled an increase in the number of vacant retail units in Edinburgh’s city centre since 2004.

  • Case study: string of pearls project

    The String of Pearls is the project name for an unprecedented programme of regeneration and redevelopment underway along the length of Edinburgh's main shopping thoroughfare and beyond

  • Caltongate

    The Caltongate Masterplan was approved by the city’s Planning Committee on 5 October 2006 and sets out the City of Edinburgh Council’s vision for the area and establishes the planning and design objectives, including the preferred land uses and development principles. The masterplan is a Council document and will be a material planning consideration in the determination of the current planning applications

  • Princes Mall

    Refurbishment of the shopping centre was completed in 2007

  • Princes Street developments

    A City centre / Princes Street development framework has been prepared and will inform the preparation of development briefs for individual urban blocks along Princes Street. It will be a material consideration in the determination of planning applications that come forward for the city centre

  • St James Centre

    Following its £184m acquisition by Henderson Global Investors in 2006, the St James Centre is to undergo a proposed multi-million pound redevelopment. The project will give Edinburgh its biggest new retail development and is tipped to provide one of the best concentrations of quality retail outside Birmingham, Manchester and London

  • St Andrew Square

    Improvements underway include a £2.6m scheme to open the gardens to the public - expected to be ready in Spring 2008 - and a major scheme to redevelop the old Scottish Provident offices on the south side of the square
