Research rankings
Analysing the level and quality of
postgraduate research activity in different institutions allows
independent assessors to judge an area's research strength.
The following table shows how Edinburgh's
higher education institutions performed in the 2001 Research
Assessment Exercise (RAE).
The ratings reflect particular strengths in
the areas of computing, electrical and electronic engineering,
mathematics, statistics and finance, biological and physical
sciences and languages.
The table shows that nine departments at
The University of Edinburgh and one
department at Heriot-Watt University achieved the highest
possible five-star rating for their research. Another three
departments at Heriot-Watt and 19 departments at The University of
Edinburgh were rated five. In total, 65 university departments in
Edinburgh and the Lothians including two at Edinburgh College of Art, four at Napier University and one at Queen Margaret University achieved strong ratings
of four or above.
