Scottish Parliament
As Scotland's capital city, Edinburgh has a long history as a
national and regional administrative centre. The creation of the
Scottish Parliament in 1999 brought new status and greater powers
to the city.
Decisions made by the devolved government at
Holyrood now impact across Scotland and often set new benchmarks
for governments around the world, including Westminster.
A recent report by EKOS, the economic
development consultancy, suggested the establishment of the
Scottish Parliament had attracted the attention of overseas
regional governments, politicians and administrators, and has
helped Edinburgh maintain its status as a major European capital
city.
The Parliament has also contributed to the
city's reputation as an 'Ideopolis' - a sustainable,
knowledge-intensive city which delivers strong economic growth and
a high quality of life across the wider city-region.
