Edinburgh's tourism development opportunities
Edinburgh has experienced growth in the value and volume of
tourism for several decades.
But as Edinburgh and the Lothians continue to see demand grow,
additional tourist
accomodation will be needed, including hotels, guest houses,
hostels and self-catering units.
To meet the Scottish Government's target of 50% growth in the
value of Scottish tourism by 2015, it is estimated that:
- Edinburgh will need up to an additional 4,000 hotel
bedrooms
- The Lothians will need up to an additional 800 bedrooms
The city is keen to attract developers to fulfil these
additional accommodation requirements.
Local Authorities are currently showing a very positive attitude
towards hotel development in their areas, reflecting the optimistic
climate for this kind of development
across the city region.
Potential developers and operators should also
note that occupancy levels and average room rates are already some
of the best in the UK and internationally. Edinburgh is currently
ranked 2nd in Europe for revPAR and Business tourism generates over
£200 million pa for the city region economy.
