Edinburgh's science and technology sector

Edinburgh City Region has a long history of innovation and is one of Europe's top ten locations for science and technology.

High-profile innovations such as the cloning of Dolly the Sheep and the creation of the first genetically engineered vaccine for Hepatitis B have contributed to this strong international profile.

Edinburgh's universities are global centres of excellence in disciplines including informatics, stem cell research, biotechnology and microelectronics.

A number of pioneering initiatives are underway across the city region, including Edinburgh BioQuarter,  a landmark UK life sciences real estate development, and Edinburgh Science Triangle, a dynamic colloboration of seven science and technology parks housing more than 3,000 world-class researchers and over 100 market-leading companies including Xilinx, IndigoVision and Helica Instruments

Other key employers in the sector include ProStrakan, AstraZeneca, Charles River Laboratories, Geron Biomed, Johnson & Johnson,  Sun Microsystems and Wolfson Microelectronics - a spin-out from The University of Edinburgh.

Edinburgh City Region's electronics sector has particular strengths in advanced silicon devices, compound semiconductors and plasma technology.

See why Selex Galileo, The Biofuel Research Centre, Aircraft Medical and Toshiba Medical have all decided to invest in Scotland's Capital City.

In choosing Edinburgh, we are adhering to our strategy of developing in a community rich with reputable, highly recognisable research and academic entities, as well as a great talent pool and strong capital base - the anchors of a thriving life science community.
