Edinburgh's creative industries workforce
Scotland has a knowledge-rich creative industries workforce with a high level of creative, craft
and technical skill.

The workforce is predominantly graduate entry, with a large
proportion of freelance working. One fifth of employees in the
sector are self-employed.
Edinburgh City Region is a centre of academic excellence in the
sector. In the 2008 Research
Assessment Exercise, the “Communication, Cultural and Media
Studies” and “Drama, Dance and Performing Arts” units of Queen
Margaret University, “Art and Design” and “Music” units of
Edinburgh Napier University, “Art and Design” unit of Heriot-Watt
University, “Music” unit of The University of Edinburgh,
“Communication, Cultural and Media Studies” unit of the University
of Stirling, “Drama, Dance and Performing Arts” unit of the
University of St Andrews and “Art and Design” unit of the Edinburgh College of Art were recognised as
conducting internationally recognised research. In 2009, The Times
ranked The University of Edinburgh the seventh best university in
the UK for art.
Public and private sector partners including Creative & Cultural Skills,
the Skills Sector Council, Skills Development
Scotland, the Scottish Arts Council and
Skillset are working on a
range of initiatives to develop the skills base in the sector.
