Scottish Business Grants - Innovation Grants

There are two types of Innovation Grants available; SMART Grants
and R&D Grants
SMART Grants
SMART Grants are the principle
source of financial assistance grants for small and medium
enterprises (SMEs) in Scotland undertaking projects that represent
a significant technological advance for the industry sector. The
purpose of SMART Grants is to help SMEs develop innovative new
projects, strengthen the competitiveness and technological base of
Scottish industry and encourage innovation.
Businesses meeting the
criteria for SMART Grants should apply to the SMART:SCOTLAND
section of the Scottish Government. Businesses must provide an
application, project proposal, business plan and accounts.
Decisions on SMART Grants
are made on the basis of a rigorous financial and technical
assessment of the project. A world-wide search of patents may be
commissioned from the UK Intellectual Property Office to ensure
that proposed projects do not infringe upon existing intellectual
property, and external organisations with technical expertise may
be consulted under the auspices of a confidentiality agreement.

Research and Development Grants (R&D Grants)
R&D Grants are the principle
source of public financial support for enterprises in Scotland
engaging in research and development that leads to the creation of
new processes, products or services. The aim of R&D Grants is
to enhance the competitiveness of companies in Scotland.
R&D Grants may be
used to finance both industrial research (research into the
acquisition of new knowledge and skills) and experimental
development (the planning and designing of new products, processes
or services). They may not be used to fund routine improvements to
existing products, processes or services.
Businesses meeting the
criteria for R&D Grants should apply to the R&D Grants
section of Scottish Enterprise, providing an application, project
proposal, business plan and accounts.
Any existing relationship
with Scottish Enterprise or additional applications for public
support for the R&D Project must be disclosed.
