Edinburgh’s financial services cluster spans
borders worldwide, with Scottish companies that are leaders in
global markets and international companies that are investing in
bases in Scotland. The capital’s connectivity to other financial
centres in the UK and internationally is key to its strength as a
financial services hub. It also allows companies to develop
supplier relationships, knowledge transfer and outsourcing
nationally and internationally.
This connectivity allows global financial
services providers to operate the large supplier networks they need
to support their business. In 2006 RBS, for example, had 15,000
suppliers around the world, while HBOS had 27,000.
Edinburgh’s reputation for financial services
has fuelled the growth of a large supplier network supporting all
areas of the industry across the city region. These include
corporate lawyers, asset servicing and human resources. Technology
and software development are also key strengths.
