Edinburgh's Waterfront
The Edinburgh Waterfront is one of the most significant
waterfront regeneration projects in Europe today.
Three companies - Waterfront Edinburgh Ltd,
Forth Ports PLC and
National Grid
Property – are overseeing the flagship £1 billion project,
which will transform the industrial periphery of Edinburgh into a
new urban quarter for the city.
Less than 3km north of the city centre, 345 acres of brownfield
and contaminated land on the shores of the Firth of Forth are being
transformed into a landmark residential, leisure, business and
tourist destination.
The Llewelyn Davies masterplan includes 30,000 new homes, 3.6m
sq ft of commercial space, eight new schools, a marina and a
proposed deepwater ocean liner terminal at Leith.
People from all over the city and the region will be able to
take advantage of new cultural and recreational opportunities. New
attractions will be magnets for the region, providing new culinary
experiences, exhibitions, festivals, musical and sporting
events.
Edinburgh's new tram system, due to
be operational in 2011, will connect the new waterfront quarter to
the city centre in 16 minutes.
