Edinburgh Trams
By 2012, world class modern trams will be running along
Edinburgh's streets, connecting Edinburgh's Waterfront,
Edinburgh Park and
Edinburgh Airport with the city
centre.
City of Edinburgh Council and the Scottish Government are
investing around £600m in the new tram system to provide a
sustainable solution to the city's transport needs as the
population grows.
Trams will
provide high-volume, environmentally-friendly transport, with
faster more consistent journey times and reduced congestion.
Each tram with carry more than 300 passengers and make the
journey from the city centre to airport in 20 minutes. Ticketing
and fares will be fully integrated with Lothian Buses, with the
same affordable fare on both.
The tram system will also benefit businesses by attracting more
visitors to the city centre.
Many cities across the globe such as Dublin, Melbourne and Paris
are realising the benefits of introducing modern, fast and reliable
trams.
Edinburgh's previous tram system closed in 1956.

When the tram is up and running, it will generally bring the burgeoning creative community (of Leith) closer into the city centre and closer to the airport, which will be very beneficial.
