Roads investment in Edinburgh City Region

Transport
Scotland, the national transport agency, has invested millions
in trunk road improvements across Edinburgh City Region including
the M8, A90, A68 and M74.
The M9 Spur extension - a new fast motorway link to take traffic
from the M9 and M8 to the Forth Road Bridge - was completed in 2007
and funded by the Forth Estuary
Transport Authority (FETA), with grant assistance from the
Scottish Government.
Around £2 billion is to be invested in a
new road bridge across the Firth of Forth, due for completion
in 2016.
In Edinburgh itself, around £30,000 a day is spent on road and
pavement improvements. More than 1m cars enter the city each week
and the number is rising.
The City of Edinburgh Council's priorities include making the
streets safer, protecting the environment and improving
accessibility, as well as improving the quality and capacity of the
road network.
Since 2000, more than £60m has been spent improving roads and
pavements, including new traffic management arrangements to reduce
traffic volumes in the city centre; six new
Park & Ride facilities around the city; an extensive
programme of
safer routes to schools; more than 30 new 20mph (32kph) zones
in residential areas and improved signage for visitors.
