Rail investment in Edinburgh City Region

Current national transport projects involving the City of
Edinburgh include the £1 billion Edinburgh-Glasgow (Rail)
Improvements Programme, an extensive programme of rail improvements
including the construction of a £300 million electric railway that
will reduce journey times and emissions.
The £150 million Waverley
Infrastructure Works project, completed by Network Rail in
2008, improved station access and increased capacity for trains at
Waverley and Haymarket stations.
Work continues on the £130 million Station Renewal
Programme at Edinburgh Waverley, with owner Network Rail
awarding Balfour Beatty the contract to replace the
34,000m2 cloud glass station roof with clear,
strengthened glass to shed more natural light on the station
concourse and platforms. Other planned station improvements include
enhancements to the Princes Street and Market Street entrances and
the demolition of vacant buildings on the station concourse. The
project is scheduled to be completed by 2013.
Haymarket Station is also at the centre of the proposed Haymarket Interchange
redevelopment to create a contemporary, multi-modal transport 'hub'
within Edinburgh.
New stations have been opened at Edinburgh Park, Brunstane and
Newcraighall.
Hundreds of millions of pounds are being invested in new and
improved rail links across Edinburgh City Region. They include the
reopening of the
Airdrie Bathgate Rail
Link , the
Stirling-Alloa-Kincardine
line and the
Borders rail link.
