With passenger numbers predicted to rise from 9m currently to
more than 26m by 2030, significant investment is underway to
develop and extend Edinburgh International
Airport.
Over the last decade, more than £260m has been spent upgrading
terminal and airfield facilities. Another £240m is pledged over the
next ten years for additional check-in, baggage reclaim, departure
lounge and boarding gate facilities, plus additional airfield
taxiways, aircraft stands and hangar facilities.
Edinburgh Airport's newest departure lounge opened to passengers
on 19 November 2009, marking the completion of the first stage of
an ongoing
£40 million redevelopment. The 2,600 square metre lounge
features an additional 450 passenger seats and a number of retail
and restaurant outlets. The second phase of the airport expansion
will see the construction of a new central passenger search
facility constructed within the terminal building, increasing the
number of x-ray machines in the airport by 50%. Work is already
underway, with a scheduled completion date of spring 2011.
Edinburgh Airport's Master Plan also states BAA Edinburgh's
commitment to build a second runway, should this be required in the
future.
