Edinburgh transport investment
Public and private partners are investing billions of
pounds into flagship transport projects across Edinburgh City
Region.
Edinburgh International Airport is
undergoing significant expansion as passenger numbers climb, with
almost £250m pledged over the next decade to improve capacity
and facilities.
More than £1 billion is being invested in an extensive programme
of rail improvements; Edinburgh Waverley
and Haymarket rail stations are both
being redeveloped and expanded, and new rail links are being
created to locations including the Borders and Stirlingshire.
The Inspiring Capital has established an international
reputation as a sustainable transport pioneer and a new £512m
tram network for the city will provide a
fast, environmentally-friendly and reliable service to and from
Edinburgh airport, Edinburgh Park, the
city centre and Leith from 2011.
The city region's road network is
also enjoying significant investment, while more than £2bn has been
pledged to create a new road bridge across the Firth of Forth by
2016.
