Edinburgh's national transport links
Air
There are around 50 flights a day to London from
Edinburgh International Airport, with a one hour flight time,
and connections to more than 20 UK and Ireland hubs including
Birmingham, Manchester and Belfast.
Road
The M74 is the main motorway south, with Manchester and
Liverpool accessible in less than 4 hours, Birmingham in less than
5 hours and London approximately 6.5 hours away. The journey to
Carlisle takes 1.5 hours, while Newcastle is 2.5 hours away on the
A1/M1 serving the east coast.
Rail
Edinburgh Waverley is Britain's largest train station outside
London and a principal station on the East Coast Main
Line between London and Aberdeen.
East Coast operates
around 20 trains a day to London, with a 4.5 hour journey time.
The West Coast main line, operated by Virgin Trains from
Glasgow, connects central Scotland to London Euston via other UK
financial centres such as Manchester and Birmingham. The First TransPennine Express
service connects Edinburgh with north England, including Manchester
Airport and the Lake District.
Bus
Stagecoach runs
budget bus services between Edinburgh, Glasgow and London under the
Megabus brand.
