Travel to work area
Edinburgh has a large metropolitan travel
to work area which provides a pool of workers from across
Central Scotland and the Borders.
West Lothian, Midlothian and East Lothian provide 22%, 21% and
19% of Edinburgh's workforce
respectively, followed by Fife (13%), the Scottish Borders (3%) and
the rest of Scotland (20%).
Glasgow City Region is a particularly important source of
labour, with around 25,000 people commuting daily to Edinburgh City Region.
Other key employment centres include Falkirk, Stirling,
Dunfermline, Livingston, Kirkcaldy and Glenrothes.
The available working age population rises from 500,000 within
half an hour's travel of Edinburgh to 2m within one and a half
hours and almost three million within 3 hours' travel.
