The Queen's Medical Research Institute

The opening of the Queen’s Medical Research Institute in July 2005 represented a major milestone in the history of scientific and medical research in Edinburgh. The Institute carries out ground –breaking research and tackles a wide range of diseases at the most fundamental cellular level and provides facilities for high quality interdisciplinary research in three key areas: Cardiovascular Science, Inflammation Research, Reproductive Biology.

QMRI currently employs around 600 researchers and aims to tackle a wide range of diseases at the most fundamental cellular level and provides facilities for high quality research into a greater understanding of common diseases.  Facilities include MRI and various other modern imaging technologies and supporting infrastructure.

Cutting edge research has attracted scientists from Europe and the US working in human cell related medicine.  Research is shared to develop the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of conditions such as coronary heart disease, diabetes, asthma, cancer and inflammation.

QMRI is located next to The University of Edinburgh Medical School and the Royal Infirmary where many of its leading scientists teach and act as consultants to the NHS hospital.

QMRI is preparing for its next expansion project - the Scottish Centre for Regenerative Medicine (SCRM).  The new £60 million centre building will be a keystone in the ‘Bio Quarter’ research park and will house around 180 scientists and provide incubator space for spin out companies. The park is attractive to companies that want to develop their life science capabilities using QMRI research as a catalyst for their development.
