Edinburgh and Lothians was recognised in 2004
by the European Commission as a "Region of Innovation
Excellence", joining an elite group of 22 European
regions. The award recognises the outstanding research
undertaken in universities and institutions throughout the city
region, particularly in the fields of medicine, life sciences and
microelectronics.

teaching. NHS Lothian's hospitals
have long-established links to Edinburgh's
prestigious universities and colleges. A new
world-class Centre for Biomedical Research has opened next
to the Royal Infirmary.

The Edinburgh Science Triangle’s unique collaboration of seven
science parks is recognised as Scotland’s most enterprising area,
with the aim of promoting Edinburgh city region’s science
capability and quality infrastructure to attract research and
