Heriot Watt Research

Edinburgh and Lothians was recognised in 2004 by the European Commission as a "Region of Innovation Excellence", joining an elite group of 22 European regions.  The award recognises the outstanding research undertaken in universities and institutions throughout the city region, particularly in the fields of medicine, life sciences and microelectronics.

Universities

One of the keys to Edinburgh's city region's success in scientific research, discovery and innovation is the research power of its academic institutions. The city is home to high-achieving universities, including the sixth highest ranked in Europe, alongside Oxford, Cambridge and three universities in London.

Teaching Hospitals

Edinburgh’s reputation as a world-class centre of excellence for medicine is built on almost three centuries of teaching. NHS Lothian's hospitals have long-established links to Edinburgh's prestigious universities and colleges. A new world-class Centre for Biomedical Research has opened next to the Royal Infirmary.

Incubators and Innovation Centres

Research can be turned into commercial advantage, used as the foundation for a business, or to add value to existing applications or manufacturing techniques.  Research today is more than likely to be a business enterprise with a combination of research and commercialisation.The objective is that after 1 – 3 years in incubators, companies move into the science parks.

Science Parks

The Edinburgh Science Triangle’s unique collaboration of seven science parks is recognised as Scotland’s most enterprising area, with the aim of promoting Edinburgh city region’s science capability and quality infrastructure to attract research and technology companies to the area.
