Edinburgh BioQuarter
Introduction
Edinburgh BioQuarter is a major collaboration
project between Scottish Enterprise, The University of Edinburgh,
NHS Lothian and Alexandria Real Estate Equities, Inc.
Unique in the UK, Edinburgh BioQuarter is the
only location to offer a large state of the art teaching hospital,
The University of Edinburgh’s world-renowned medical school and
bespoke biomedical research and development facilities on one
site.
Accommodation
The 100 acre site at BioQuarter will
ultimately provide more than 500,000 square feet of further
academic research space and an additional 900,000 square feet of
accommodation for commercial research-based companies.
Facilities and Services
The science park aims to provide a choice of
laboratory and office space for commercial organisations from
start-up incubator units to flexible multi-user spaces and
strategic individual sites for biomedical companies.
A range of facilities will be shared between
commercial, academic and health service related research
organisations, providing a synergistic environment that encourages
collaborative working.
Location
A keystone investment at the heart of Scotland’s Life Sciences
strategy, BioQuarter is located close to Edinburgh city centre at
Little France; the perfect environment for a company locating in
Scotland, with access to world class specialist research teams,
through to providing new build facilities and a skilled workforce
that allows companies to create and build their own high quality
research teams.
Knowledge Exchange
Locating at BioQuarter affords tenant
companies the opportunity to harness the collaborative power of
world class research and clinical expertise to deliver research,
clinical and commercial objectives.
Over 1,000 life science researchers are based at Edinburgh
BioQuarter. Many are located in The University of Edinburgh’s
Queen’s Medical Research Institute, or in the adjacent medical
school. This results in high quality ‘bench to bedside’
research.
Within Edinburgh - its academic
institutions, NHS Scotland and the commercial base – there is a
particular focus on a number of therapeutic areas including
regenerative medicine, cardiovascular disease, neuroscience,
reproduction, infection, inflammation and oncology. In addition,
there is expertise in disciplines that span therapeutic areas such
as systems biology and imaging.
Business Support
Business support provided by Scottish
Enterprise and Scottish Development International is available for
tenants of the BioQuarter which may provide access to a wide range
of funding options both public and private - these include for
example innovative support schemes for research and development and
for training.
